about

16 years since the release of "BEATS!!!! Vol.1" Markey Funk digs deep into his vaults to unleash further chapters in the series, which offer a look behind the scenes at his formative years. Each chapter provides a different angle on Markey's creative world and adds the long-missing context within his discography, spanning now two decades.

The third volume is a collection of beats produced for Baltimore-born rapper Rebel Sun a.k.a. A7, whom Markey befriended at the weekly Saturday Night Shelter freestyle jams at Diwan pub in Jerusalem in 2003. The two developed a special DJ-MC chemistry and shortly after Markey left BangLaDeath, began working on their original songs, taking inspiration from psychedelic soul, jazz-funk and afro-futurism. Around the same time, Rebel Sun joined a local live band Coolooloosh, which quickly became one of the prominent names on the Israeli groove scene. Despite operating in the shadow of the Coolooloosh's success, the duo regularly played live shows between 2006 and early 2008, including a few festival appearances in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Gradually approaching an album's worth of recorded material, the two put together a promotional EP with 5 songs, including "Harmony", the music video for which (directed by another Markey's rap collaborator - Boiler) would later enter the nighttime playlist on Israel's national music TV channel - Channel 24. However, their collaboration was cut short in February 2008 by a dramatic hard-drive crash, which left all of Markey's work to date in an unrecoverable mess.

During this period, Markey found himself expanding his approach - not only in chopping samples - but also by playing keys himself and adding guest live musicians to his arrangements. Much of this experience found its further use in his first works post-"(forgot the word)".
